EL Poster vs EL Tape Signage: What Really Changes

Spec EL poster EL tape
Area covered A whole printed face Lines and borders
Thickness 1.8–2mm board Under 1mm plus adhesive
Graphics Printed artwork, zones can animate No artwork, just light lines
Mounting Wall, frame or hanging Any surface or garment
Best use Posters, menu walls, entrance graphics Costume outlines, counter edges

EL Garments vs Printed Garments: They Are Not the Same Upgrade

  • Visibility after dark: print disappears; EL stays readable, which is the whole point of night events.
  • Photography: lit garments photograph well on a phone, which turns staff into content.
  • Care: print survives normal washing; an EL panel has to be detached and the wiring kept dry.
  • Cost per wear: print is cheaper per garment; EL is re-used across events by moving the panel.

How to Choose an EL Product Mix for an Event

  1. Start from where people look: staff chests and caps first, then walls and entrances, then floor and counter edges.
  2. Pick two or three formats rather than the whole catalogue; a mix reads as a campaign, a full catalogue reads as a sample box.
  3. Match the power plan: each panel, tape run and wire piece needs its own inverter; count them before ordering.
  4. Confirm fixing per garment: sewn for permanent staff uniforms, hook-and-loop where the garment must be returned.
  5. Ask for a dark-room photo of the actual artwork, not a stock image of the product.
  6. Order spares: one inverter and one panel per event, because a single dead piece is visible in every photo.

Common Mistakes Buyers Make

  • Buying every format for one event. The budget spreads thin and nothing is bright enough to register.
  • Forgetting inverters in the count. Panels arrive without drivers and the event runs dark.
  • Sewing through the panel. Stitch around the edge, never across the lit area.
  • Using white artwork on a white garment. The glow needs contrast to read; plan the base colour.
  • No detach plan. Panels glued permanently to uniforms cannot be washed or reused.

Where EL Product Mixes Are Used

  • United States and Canada: night promotions, Halloween and brand activations; caps and T-shirts dominate.
  • United Kingdom and Germany: club and festival staffing, plus trade show giveaways.
  • Spain, Portugal and Brazil: carnival and street festival costumes; heat shortens battery life, so specify a larger pack.
  • Middle East: indoor launches where lighting is controlled and the glow is part of the set.

Keeping EL Pieces Working

  • Detach before washing. Panels and tape survive folding, not the drum.
  • Coil the cable loosely. Sharp bends at the connector are the most common failure point.
  • Remove batteries for storage. A leaking cell destroys the pack and the contacts.
  • Keep inverters dry even when the panel is waterproof; the driver is the part that is not.
  • Test every piece before an event, not on the morning of the event.

Packing and Shipping Notes Buyers Should Agree Up Front

Damage claims almost always trace back to a packing decision nobody wrote down. These are the lines worth fixing before the first carton is sealed.

  • Inner protection per unit: polybag and corner protection for printed goods, foam and a rigid divider for anything with a face or a lens.
  • Carton strength: five-ply for export, with the carton size and gross weight on the packing list so freight can be quoted properly.
  • Mixed orders: one carton per SKU where possible; mixed cartons save volume and cost sorting time at the destination.
  • Marks and labels: shipping marks, carton numbering and the PO number on every carton, so a short shipment is provable.
  • Photographs before sealing: a photo of the packed carton and of the pallet is the cheapest insurance there is.

Ask for the packing list with the quotation. If it is missing, the freight estimate will be a guess and the claim process will be a negotiation.

Warranty, Claims and What to Agree in Writing

  • What is covered: manufacturing defects such as stitching, bonding, wiring and print registration, as opposed to wear from wind, sun or handling.
  • How long: ask for the period per component rather than one figure for the whole product, because frames and printed graphics rarely share the same term.
  • How to report: photographs of the fault, the carton label and the packing list in the first message save a week of questions.
  • What happens next: replacement, credit or repair, and who pays the freight on the return.
  • Spares: agreeing a small spare allowance at order time is cheaper than an air shipment later.

None of this needs to be complicated. It needs to be on the order confirmation rather than in a conversation, because that is the document both sides will read when something goes wrong.

How to Brief a Mixed EL Order

Mixed orders fail for one reason: the brief lists items but not how they will be used together. Five lines fix that.

  • The scene: night event, indoor launch, or retail window, because each one changes brightness and battery choice.
  • How many people wear or carry a piece, and whether garments are returned or kept.
  • The artwork per format: a poster and a T-shirt need different files, and a cap needs a much simpler mark.
  • Colour plan: one colour across the mix reads as a campaign; four colours read as samples.
  • Power and spares: count inverters and batteries per piece, plus one spare per event.

With those five lines the mix can be quoted as a set, with packing that keeps the electronics separate from the garments.

Buyer questions

Which EL product should we start with for an event?
Start from where the audience looks: T-shirts and caps for staff and crowds, posters for walls and entrances, tape and wire for outlines. Most first orders mix two or three of them.

Do all EL items use the same power supply?
No. Panels, tape and wire differ in length and current, so each piece is matched with its own inverter. We confirm the power option per item on the quotation.

Bottom line

EL products are cheap to run and easy to see in low light, which is why they keep coming back in event and promotion orders. Tell us the scene – staff uniforms, wall posters, vehicle graphics – and we will propose the mix that fits the budget.
